Thomas Braut
Thomas Braut is a French photographer and art director born in 1989. With all the fugue of the self-taught, he embraces his art with raw passion, bringing a fresh perspective and an ardent desire to offer new vistas to visual representation.
Brilliant colors and meticulous staging conspire to give his works epic scope. His photos manifest wide-ranging influences, from the exuberance of Baroque paintings to the effervescence of American pop culture. However, his art never stoops to replicating reality; he sculpts and models each image to reveal a dreamlike vision, completely transformed. Through his lens, a routine activity becomes a glorious moment of timeless beauty.
Thomas expresses himself primarily through photo montage. This alchemy between the initial shot and meticulous post-production allows him to create his own personal universe where every element, from lighting to the smallest detail, has been thought out and composed with the utmost care. From day one, he has always exhibited his works and ventured out into social media, a powerful showcase which has enabled him to build a loyal community for his artistic project. This online recognition has opened doors to prestigious collaborations with the likes of Katy Perry and Céline Dion, as well as luxury brands from Paris to New York.
In 2017, his Epique exhibition at the ‘6, Mandel’ gallery in Paris, drew its inspiration from the great French Masters and struck a lasting chord with visitors. His unique signature also caught the eye of French TV channel TF1 who have made him a creative mainstay. His talents are called on for projects including made-for-TV fictions, The Voice, police series HPI and the new mini-series Les Combattantes.
Today, six years after his last exhibition, Thomas Braut unveils Escape, a more introspective collection. These works express a longing for change, the quest for meaning and escapism. In each of the 20 works on display at VELUX ART, all the protagonists seem to be asking themselves ‘What am I doing here?’ while some of the bolder ones respond with life-changing decisions. Hidden amidst stunningly beautiful decors, these isolated individuals meditate life in spectacular American settings.
In the same way that VELUX transforms and reshapes space, Thomas Braut, through his montages, reinvents reality. Each work tells a story of transformation, of change, of new perspective. They offer us a way to transcend our everyday lives, to layer on a new dimension, one that is luminous and inspiring.
